We go to Sunday River a lot, here’s a brief history of it.
The history of Sunday River in Maine began in the early 1800s when the first settlers arrived in the area. The area was a sparsely populated farming community for many years and it wasn’t until the late 1950s when the area began to develop as a ski resort. The resort was started by a group of local investors who wanted to create a winter recreation area for the people of Maine. They developed the ski area on Sunday River and in 1958 the first ski lifts were installed.
The resort continued to grow over the years and in the 1970s, Sunday River was purchased by American Skiing Company. They continued to invest in the resort and by the 1980s, Sunday River had become one of the premier ski areas in the East. The resort now offers over 130 trails, 8 peaks, and 15 lifts. Sunday River also offers a variety of summer activities including hiking, mountain biking, golf, and ziplining. It is one of Maine’s most popular tourist destinations and continues to be an integral part of the local economy.
